What are the main activities of IEA Hydro during Phase 7 from 2025–2030?

IEA Hydro will continue to contribute to a better global understanding of the essential role hydropower is playing in the global energy turnaround towards reducing green house gas emissions. Hydropower does not only provide energy but it enables the integration of new renewables into electricity grids by providing flexibility and storage. Innovative technologies and market opportunities are key aspects. Ongoing and new Tasks focus on 1) Flexibility and the Value of Storage and Flexibitity provided by Hydropower, including from Pumped Storage (Task 9), lead by Norway, 2) on opportunities to develop Hidden Hydro mostly at existing infrastructure but also by enhancing existing hydropower (Task 16), lead by Switzerland, 3) on Hydropower and Fish, particularly on Environmental Flows, Fish Migration and innovative remote Sensing Technologies (Task 19), lead by the US, and 4) a new Task on Digital Twins in Hydropower not only electromechanical components but including entire catchments with its hydrological bahaviou or water bodies and their ecological performance (Task 20), lead by China.
